My newest music video role.... "I'm pretty sure I play a home wrecker." - me upon reading the treatment #typical
It's strange to say that I've been in other music videos, but I guess I can now. I was most recently in country artist Chris Young's "Losing Sleep" music video shot in Nashville and on the day of shooting I walked on to a set of what must have been 60 people. It was a huge production and you felt it. This video for Umphrey's Mcgee, on the other hand, was quite the opposite.
Any sane actor would do their research upon receiving any booking. So, upon googling "Umphrey's Mcgee" I was so nervous to find out I was unaware of the entire GENRE, not just the band. This was going to be interesting.
The video was shot on a Sunday afternoon at a studio in Dallas called Reel FX which is know for animation, not music videos, so that was oddity #1. Then when I got to the studio, there must have been a total of only five cars in the parking lot, oddity #2.
"Maybe the tour bus is parked in the back?"
I got ahold of my contact for the studio production, Ross, and he greeted me at the doors flanked by his children, oddity #3. Ross led me through a ghost-town animation office space to the "studio" where it was being shot. To my surprise, there was only one man, a tripod with a camera attached, and a white background.
No band. How was this going to be possible?
I was explained a story line that aligned with the lyrics of the song and the locations that would be shown in the video and then I was asked to act them out on camera. All of the interaction with the band and myself would be edited in in post production.
Ross, Pete, and I were done filming in one hour. This was the most outlandish booking of my career. I left that studio without ANY IDEA what the video was going to look like! Now here it is. A visual feast of animation and special effects.
A Huge congrats to everyone involved! I am blown away with what animators can do these days. You guys at Reel FX and Umphrey's McGee, I am so thankful to be apart of this technological masterpiece!
Guess what, they're on TOUR!
